When does a tree need to be removed in Piedmont?

Tree removal is usually not the first option. In many cases, careful pruning, deadwood removal or another form of tree care may be enough.

There are situations, however, where removing a tree can be the safest or most practical solution. This can be particularly relevant for older trees, storm-damaged trees or trees growing close to a house, road, terrace or driveway.

The condition of a tree is not always easy to assess from ground level. When in doubt, it is important to look not only at the size or appearance of the tree, but also at the trunk, crown, root zone and surrounding area.

Dead or severely damaged branches

Dead branches can break unexpectedly and may pose a risk when they hang above a house, terrace, parking area, driveway or road.

A tree with deadwood does not automatically need to be removed. In many cases, the affected branches can be safely pruned. However, if a large part of the crown is dead or the tree is clearly declining, further assessment may be advisable.

Decay, cavities or damage to the trunk

Decay, large cavities, cracks or other damage to the trunk can affect the stability of a tree.

A hollow tree is not automatically unsafe. Many mature trees can remain healthy for years with cavities in the trunk. What matters is how much sound wood remains and where any structural weaknesses are located.

Leaning trees or changes around the roots

A tree that has always grown at an angle is not necessarily a problem. A recent or increasing lean, however, can be a warning sign.

Things to look out for include:

  • lifted soil around the root zone;
  • cracks in the ground;
  • a recently developed lean;
  • damaged or exposed roots;
  • changes following excavation or building work.

The root zone plays an important role in tree stability and is sometimes overlooked during work around homes and gardens.

Storm damage

Damage after strong winds or storms is not always immediately visible. Large branches may be partially split, unions in the crown may be weakened and existing defects can become more serious.

If a tree looks different after a storm, has lost major branches or shows visible cracks, it may be wise to have it checked before the next period of severe weather.

Too close to a house, wall or other structures

Sometimes a tree is healthy but is growing in a location where it may cause problems over time.

Examples include trees that:

  • grow against a roof or façade;
  • have too little space to develop properly;
  • obstruct a driveway or terrace;
  • conflict with walls, cables or other structures.

In some cases, pruning is sufficient. In others, removal and replacement with a more suitable tree may be the better long-term option.

Not every problem tree needs to be removed.

Depending on the situation, the appropriate solution may include:

  • deadwood removal;
  • targeted pruning;
  • reduction of specific branches;
  • improving the crown structure;
  • regular monitoring;
  • complete tree removal.
